File Transfer is Not What it Used to Be
Increasing file sizes, more stringent compliance requirements, and stronger security
drive demand for secure, reliable and well-managed file transfer solutions
Lexington, MA - August 12, 2009 – Ipswitch, Inc. File Transfer division, the leading developer of secure and managed file transfer solutions, today announced it's sponsorship of a new benchmark report called File Transfer is Not What it Used to Be: It's Secure, Reliable and Well-Managed, published by Aberdeen Group, a Harte-Hanks Company (NYSE:HHS). This report explains why the time has come for file transfer to come out of the basement and gain recognition for what it is: as a mission-critical, enterprise-class application.
"Managing the surprising degree of complexity that can be involved in the simple notion of transferring files from point A to point B cannot be the best allocation of any organization's limited IT resources, or end-user time and effort," said Derek E. Brink, vice president and research fellow for IT Security, Aberdeen Group. "Aberdeen's research has shown that persisting in the digital do-it-yourself approach to file transfer is not secure, not convenient, not compliant, and definitely not 'free.'"
Five key findings from the research:
- Best-in-Class companies experienced 10 times fewer data loss or data exposure incidents in the past 12 months compared to Laggards.
- Based on an average cost per security incident of $640,000 Best-in-Class companies avoided more than $6M in expenses in the last 12 months compared to Laggard organizations.
- Best-in-Class companies save $150,000 in net present value for every full-time equivalent help desk staff assigned primarily to file transfer-related issues.
- On an annualized basis Best-in-Class companies reduced simple human error (e.g., policy violations) related to file transfer by 6.5% compared to Laggards.
- In comparison to Laggards, Best-in-Class companies reduced the number of audit deficiencies related to file transfer by 6.3% over the past 12 months.
Today’s file transfer solutions have quietly transformed themselves into full-featured, enterprise-class solutions that enable secure, reliable and well-managed webs of critical connections for person-to-person collaboration and process-to-process integration. As a prime example of the modern "plumbing" that enables collaboration and integrates business processes, secure and managed file transfer solutions have specifically been designed to liberate overburdened administrators and end-users from the cost and complexity of managing file transfers in the typical heterogeneous IT computing infrastructure. Secure, managed file transfer also addresses many of the security and cost shortcomings of physical "copy and carry" delivery mechanisms and legacy "digital do-it-yourself" file transfer approaches.
